DER TRAUM VOM GROSSEN BLAUEN WASSER

1993, Switzerland

Karl Saurer

In 1937, after a construction period of five years, the Sihl river in the Etzel valley was dammed. Over a hundred farms were lost to flooding, and more than 1,700 people were forced to leave. Using original material, Saurer's film documents this historic event and gives a voice to those affected. The film presents both historical and current issues revolving around Lake Sihl. The largest reservoir in Switzerland is a popular recreational area for people in and around Zurich and an important power supplier for rail traffic. But it is also a silent threat.
