Overview DOCUMENTARY FILM COMPETITION
News – 03.05.2023
For the Documentary Film Competition, six outstanding, international documentary feature-length films are nominated for the City of Innsbruck Prize worth 3,000 euros. This year's jury consists of Marie-Christine Hartig (Festival Director ethnocineca-Int. Documentary Film Festival Vienna), Abdallah AlKhatib (Palestinian-Syrian film director) and Jan-Christoph Gockel (theatre director, filmmaker).
In their own unique way, the documentaries nominated this year show realities of life from all over the world in impressive images. In ALIS, traumatised young women imagine the fictitious Alis and thus finally dare to talk about themselves. In AL-YAD AL-KHADRA, artist Jumana Manna focuses on the Palestinian plants Zatar and Akoub and their significance for the population. In ANHELL69, Theo Montoya deals with the loss of queer friends and shows us the brutal reality of queer subculture in Medellín. The children in the villages in the north of Cameroon are under constant threat: the danger from Boko Haram is always in the air, as Cyrielle Raingou sensitively shows in LE SPECTRE DE BOKO HARAM. NOUS, ÉTUDIANTS! is about the precarious living conditions of students at the University of Bangui in the Central African Republic. And in OR DE VIE, the audience is taken to a gold-mining settlement in Burkina Faso, where young people hope to make a quick buck despite all the dangers.
