ЛИСТОПАД / GIORGOBISTWE (FALLING LEAVES)

1966, USSR

Otar Iosseliani

Tbilisi in the 1960s: after leaving school, Niko starts working in a wine combine. He witnesses minor and major misconduct, but when unripe wine is to be bottled to meet the planned wine target, Niko cannot remain silent. But he is the only one who stands up against this practice. The situation at work and his first love give Niko a sobering introduction to the adult world. In his first feature-length film, Iosseliani links individual issues with social problems that are mutually dependent. The Georgian director takes a revealing look at Soviet economic production with a lot of humour.
