IFFI - Weltweite Visionen

IFFI – WELTWEITE VISIONEN presents Spike Lee’s DO THE RIGHT THING, which brought his major breakthrough in 1989. 31 years later, it couldn’t be more powerful and topical: the killing of Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn) bears tragical similarities to the murders of George Floyd and Eric Garner.Mookie, played by Spike Lee himself, is the pizza delivery guy for Sal’s Famous Pizzeria, whose owner (Danny Aiello) is proud of having supplied his black neighborhood with food for over 20 years. His sons Pino (John Turturro) and Vito (Richard Edson) are drawn as contrasting personalities, one is an aggressive racist, the other trying to assimilate. This is just an example of how the characters in the film are smartly arranged as stereotypes representing different positions. Nevertheless, the film never commits the mistake of offering a simple solution to complex issues, such as cultural differences. With gaudy colors, dramaturgical sensitivity, and a sense of humor, Spike Lee’s masterpiece narrates how on the hottest day of summer in a Brooklyn block racial resentment and social tensions boil up and erupt a furious act of destruction.
