BOOK PRESENTATION: Weltreise in 40 plus 3 Tagen um die Welt by Helmut Groschup

The texts for "Weltreise" were written during a travel-free period from March to May 2021. Every day during the lockdown, Groschup took his family and closest acquaintances on a journey to his places of longing and past memories via email. The last place he visited was the film festival in Munich, where he died on July 1, 2023. "My trip around the world is a spontaneous recording of my memory at the time of writing and nothing else. If I write a story on a different day, it sounds different and the person or place looks completely different."

FILMBISQUIT: Diversity or Cultural Approbriation?

The terms ‘international film’ or ‘world cinema’ are used to describe cinema outside of the film culture of one’s own country. But how diverse are films in cinemas really? Productions outside of the dominant Hollywood canon are still outsiders in Europe. When it comes to real representation in films, too, we seem to prefer what’s tried and tested rather than what’s authentic. What can we do to bring more diversity onto cinema screens? We want to discuss these topics in an interactive format.

TALK: Who is actually speaking? A panel discussion on participation in film.

Documentary film is many things, but it is not fiction. Or maybe it is? It is tempting to completely strip the documentary material of its original context during the artistic process in order to fit it into one's own idea of a functional story. But what if it is only in these moments that the documentary film comes into its own, as Werner Herzog likes to claim? Is this a glimpse into the hidden depths of reality or are filmmakers ignoring their responsibility towards the protagonists? The question of power takes centre stage here: who is telling a story about whom and how? After all, it is the narrator who determines our perception of the world. In this panel discussion, dok.at, together with selected IFFI filmmakers, will address these questions and take a critical look at the positioning and purpose of documentary film.
