Я КУБА / SOY CUBA

1964, USSR/Cuba

Michail Kalatozov

The Cuban Revolution in four episodes: two about social injustice, oppression, and American influence; two about heroic revolutionaries. The message is blatantly propagandistic. But this does not detract from the film’s visual brilliance. The camerawork is outstanding: iconic tracking shots and perfect image compositions. After its release, SOY CUBA soon disappeared from cinema screens. American life might have been too tempting, the revolution shown perhaps too unheroically. The film fell into oblivion until it was rediscovered by Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola in 1995.
