Ousmane Sembène
Film pioneer Ousmane Sembène adapted his own novel into a snarky satire on the corruption of the elites following Senegal's independence: El Hadji becomes a member of the powerful elite after the French withdraw. On his wedding night with his third wife, he experiences erectile dysfunction, for which he blames an evil curse. He seeks out faith healers who demand extortionate fees. And he has to bear the costs – in place of the patriarchy whose power has not been legitimised by the people.
