WRITING WITH FIRE

The newspaper Khabar Lahariya stands out from the Indian news landscape, which is dominated by rich men, for several reasons: it is run solely by women – women who are Dalit, members of the lowest caste. They report on violence against women, illegal mines and increasing Hindu nationalism; and, at the same time, they have to make the leap into the online world – with employees who have never even owned a smartphone before. This film is the first Indian documentary that was nominated for an Academy Award.
