WEST INDIES OU LES NÈGRES MARRONS DE LA LIBERTÉ
1979, France/Algeria/Mauretania
Med Hondo
In Med Hondo’s elaborate portrayal of the colonial history of the French Antilles, an ensemble in a wooden ship sings, dances and acts out historical facts about France’s exploitation of the Caribbean islands. In his decolonial, satirical version of traditional musical comedy, Hondo depicts the centuries-long settling of African slaves, the uprisings of the oppressed and the self-conception of the imperialists. The West Indies are still not free of foreign domination; another reason why this cinematic portrait is still relevant today.
