WELCOME II THE TERRORDOME

1994, UK

Ngozi Onwurah

The first film directed by a Black British woman to receive a UK theatrical release in the 1990s, WELCOME II THE TERRORDOME’s title refers to a track by the famous New York hip hop group Public Enemy in their 1991 album Fear of a Black Planet. Starting in North Carolina, USA, with an Ibo family resisting slavery, the film jumps into a British fetid slum from a near future to which Black people have been relegated. Dealing with police brutality, this unclassifiable low-budget visionary piece about racial tensions was radically ahead of its time.
