WA LAKIN ALARDH TADUR (IT STILL ROTATES)
1978, USSR
Suliman Mohamed Ibrahim Elnour
After gaining independence in the late 1960s, Yemen started to lean towards the Soviet Union. During his trip to Yemen, Elnour was impressed by the enthusiasm to find new ways. He was particularly fascinated by the schools built in the desert for Bedouins: on the one hand, they were made to suit the Bedouins, a place where new alliances were to be formed; on the other hand, they constituted a symbol of profound cultural transformation – an attempt to make the Bedouins settle down. Despite numerous problems during filming, the film was awarded a prize at the Moscow Film Festival.
