ВРЕМЕНА ГОДА (THE SEASONS)

1975, USSR

Artavazd Pelešjan

Pelešjan's films are complete compositions in which image and sound have equal value. Vivaldi's Four Seasons sets the rhythm for rural life in Armenia. Work and rituals seem to have fallen out of time as eternal cycles. The sheep are brought up the mountain. The grass is cut in a steady rhythm with the scythe. This film seems more documentary-like than Pelešjan's earlier works. This may be due to the slower montage rhythm, the soundtrack, which features some original pieces, or the fact that Pelešjan does not use archive material but instead worked together with cinematographer Mikhail Vartanov.
