UN SEÑOR MUY VIEJO CON UNAS ALAS ENORMES (EIN SEHR ALTER MANN MIT RIESIGEN FLÜGELN)
1988, Cuba/Spain
Fernando Birri
The Argentinian director and ‘father of new Latin American cinema’, Fernando Birri, tells the eponymous story written by his friend Gabriel García Márquez. Pelayo and Elisanda rescue an old man with white wings from the water and put him up in a chicken coop. Their neighbour is certain: it's an angel! The priest is sceptical, but the simple village quickly turns into a place of pilgrimage with a fairground. In a celebration of colour and taboo, Birri creates a psychedelic satire about the belief in miracles and greedy profiteering.
