TOROBORO: EL NOMBRE DE LAS PLANTAS (TOROBORO: THE NAME OF THE PLANTS)
2024, Ecuador/Brazil
Manolo Sarmiento
25 years ago, two botanists travelled to the Waorani, a tribe who lives in the Ecuadorian Amazon region. They wanted to scientifically document the diversity of trees in the region for the first time. The Waorani told them that they had a name for each of the 625 (!) species and that they had use for each and every one of them. In this film, the researchers return to meet some of the people who made the study possible. One of the Waorani states that their trouble began with the bridge over the Toroboro River. Since then, the area has been continuously and increasingly exploited by oil companies.
