THIS IS NOT A BURIAL, IT’S A RESURRECTION

In a hillside settlement in Lesotho, Mantoa waits for her son to return home from work in a South African mine. Instead, news of his death arrives. Mantoa soon seems ready to bid farewell to her own earthly existence; the elderly widow begins to plan her funeral. When she finds out that her village is to make way for a reservoir, her spirits are revived: she refuses to give up the land and soil of her ancestors without a fight. In painting-like compositions, this story of grief transforms into a meditative reflection on loss and resistance.
