THE NATURAL HISTORY OF DESTRUCTION
2022, Germany/Lithuania/Netherlands
Sergei Loznitsa
The essay collection "Luftkrieg und Literatur" serves as inspiration for this film, in which W. G. Sebald reflects on the concealment and amnesia following World War Two as well as the importance of bearing witness to the past. Loznitsa uses archive footage to address the bombings and asks the following questions: can it be justified to use the civilian population as a means of war? Can this be based on and justified by higher ‘moral’ ideas? An issue that is just as relevant today as it was 80 years ago and whose urgency is tragically demonstrated by current events.
