THE KIEV TRIAL

2022, Netherlands/Ukraine

Sergei Loznitsa

The Kiev Trial took place in the Soviet Union in January 1946. It was one of the first trials in which German Nazis and collaborators – a total of 15 people – were indicted. Loznitsa reconstructs key moments of the trials using the testimonies of defendants and witnesses – among them survivors of Auschwitz and Babyn Yar. From previously unseen archive footage, Loznitsa assembles, as always, an extremely precise and impressive document that exposes the ‘Banality of Evil’ and is frighteningly topical.
