THE ETILAAT ROZ

2022, Afghanistan

Abbas Rezaie

The journalists at Etilaat Roz, Afghanistan's largest daily newspaper, have been investigating corruption and abuse of office for ten years. The independent medium received an award from Transparency International in 2020. When the US army frantically organizes its retreat, President Ghani flees the country and the Taliban take power, the full extent of the danger becomes apparent: censorship is imposed, bank accounts are blocked and journalists are attacked on the streets. While the Taliban fire outside, the publisher and editors discuss what to do next. Is critical reporting still possible at all? Should they risk their safety and that of their families to do so - or is the price too high? (Human Rights Film Festival Berlin)
