THE EARTH IS BLUE AS AN ORANGE

2020, Ukraine/Lithuania

Iryna Tsilyk

How can you convey in a film what it means to live in a war zone? Mira from the Donbass region tries to answer this question. Together with her mother and her three younger siblings, she makes a film about exactly that. She interviews her family, has them re-enact scenes with soldiers, and discusses how to proceed with the film – all the while the war is raging outside. Iryna Tsilyk follows this project, capturing loving, humorous family scenes amid the atrocities of the war. This intelligent, captivating meta-film conveys the pain and horrors of the war without visually depicting its brutality.
