Young cop Jim Chee is transferred to a reservation inhabited mainly by Njavo and Hopi Indians, and mysterious things start happening right away. Jim Chee starts to investigate and has to deal with the different interests of his cop colleagues, the FBI, the quarreling Indian tribes and their superstitions.
