TANGOS, EL EXILIO DE GARDEL (1st America Film Festival, 1992)
Fernando E. Solanas
A dance group driven into exile in Paris by the military coup in 1976 rehearses a "tanguedia" - a mixture of tragedy and comedy based on the tango. The production never reaches a conclusion. The author, who has stayed behind in Argentina, falls silent, the French director cannot cope with the mentality of the troupe, the Argentines are homesick and suffer from the military dictatorship. TANGOS is nothing more than the persistent desire to return, it tells the story of Juan Uno and Juan Dos. Uno is the writer who stays in the country. Dos, the composer who leaves it. TANGOS is at the same time a series of stories about exile and about the dream of the longed-for land. TANGOS is the exile of the soul of the people, personified by Carlos Gardel, the symbol of the song sung by the people. Fernando E. Solonas: "TANGOS gathers the best of our music and dances: the greatest tango orchestra, that of Osvaldo Pugliese, or the chansons of Castineira de Dios, and different choreographers and dancers who express all levels of tango from the classical to the modern."
