ŠUTNJA RAZUMA (SILENCE OF REASON)
2023, North Macedonia/ Bosnia and Herzegovina
Kumjana Novakova
Kumjana Novakova uses visual archive material and verbal statements to create a collective memory that is as significant as it is hard to bear: during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, women were systematically captured and raped in Foča. The unspeakable finds its precise localisation with shimmering video camera images and sobering photographs, overlaid with anonymised voices and text of survivors' testimonies before the UN Tribunal in 2000. Foča was the first ever case where rape was convicted as a form of torture and sexual slavery, and with that, as a crime against humanity.
