Brittany Shyne

In her debut feature film, Brittany Shyne accompanies Black farmers in the Southern US. Shot in shades of grey, this sensitive portrait shows the farmers’ everyday lives in a way that is both poetic and informative. Despite farmers having access to modern means of production to help them harvest crops like cotton, potatoes and pecans, the job remains tough – not least because farmers have to battle institutionalised racism and fight for funding, hence their future. While in 1910, Black farmers owned around 16 million hectares of land, it is only a fraction of that today.
