SCHOOL DAZE

1988, USA

Spike Lee

The student body of a traditionally Black college in the Southern United States seems divided: Dap is protesting to make the university disavow donors who support the apartheid regime in South Africa; Julian, the leader of an elite student fraternity, is opposed to it. Their girlfriends Rachel and Jane clash with each other, too. In musical sequences and emotional debates, conflicts over complex issues, such as what it means to be Black in an unequal society, come strongly to the fore. Patriarchal beliefs are also relentlessly exposed in Spike Lee’s second film.
