POWAQQATSI
1988, USA
Godfrey Reggio
Powaqqatsi is the second part of Reggio's Qatsi trilogy. The term from the Hopi language means ‘life in transformation’, as in the subhead, but can also refer to parasitic life. In this dichotomy of development, he shows groups of people from Africa, Asia and Latin America and tackles industrialisation. In this cinematic realisation of a new-age holism, in which everything is connected, Reggio predicted in 1988 the empty flood of images found on TikTok and the likes. Arranged to a composition by Philip Glass, Reggio's world view raises questions of exoticisation even today.
