POR PRIMERA VEZ

1967, Cuba

Octavio Cortázar

The travelling projection units of "Cine Móvil" bring cinema to the rural areas of Cuba. In a remote village in the easternmost municipality of Cuba (Baracoa), there are people who have never seen a film. They are asked what they imagine cinema to be. With the film "Modern Times" by Charles Chaplin, an entire village experiences the magic of cinema for the first time - just like those viewers who were able to experience a Lumière screening far more than 100 years ago... Cinema as a world of illusion and as a means of enlightenment: POR PRIMERA VEZ is a testimony to Cuba's "audiovisual literacy" in the 1960s. It shows the first screening of a mobile cinema in a remote mountain village and features Chaplin's Modern Times. (berlinale.de)
