ONLY GHOSTS IN THE WAVES

The Mediterranean island of Lampedusa is mostly known as a destination for people fleeing to Europe. For Enrico, the undertaker in this film, it is home. His daily confrontation with European migration policy and its consequences has left a deep mark on him and triggered a change of heart. He speaks of his doubts about God and his efforts to bury the victims of the numerous boat accidents with as much dignity as possible – in close-ups and in thoughtful, almost postcard-like images of the island, which looks quite different than its media representation.
