ĖNTUZIAZM: SIMFONIJA DONBASSA

Vertovs first sound film is dedicated to the first Five-Year Plan. The film is shot in the mines and factories in Donbass and at the conference of the Ukrainian communist party in Charkiv. In three parts, he shows the obstacles on the way to the bright future (alcohol and religion), the achievements of the manufacturing industry and its steady growth as well as the vision of an industrialised agricultural system. Vertov is as visionary and pioneering in making his soundtrack as he is in cutting and creating a montage. Even back then, he was already using original sound recordings captured on a 1,000-kg recorder.
