NOW!
1965, Cuba
Santiago Álvarez
An early music video meets anti-American propaganda. The great Cuban documentary filmmaker Santiago Álvarez edits newsreel footage and photos showing police violence against Black people in the US and Ku Klux Klan activities. In a rousing rhythm, he arranges the images accompanied by the protest song ‘Now!’ by US singer Lena Horne, which was released shortly after the March on Washington where Martin Luther King gave his famous ‘I have a dream’ speech. Banned in the United States, the song’s explosive power bursts forth in this film.
