Joaquim is unemployed and about to retire. He drives from company to company in his Mercedes Elegance, collecting stamps for the job centre. Speaking of time – with his Elvis quiff and his extravagant styling, time seems to stand still in Joaquim’s life. This and all the anecdotes from his life make him a secret working class superstar. Susana Nobre oscillates between observation and careful re-enactment, using a confident film language (brilliant on 16mm), one that Aki Kaurismäki would enjoy. Once again, you might ask yourself where the documentary ends and where the feature film begins.
