НАША АФРИКА (OUR AFRICA)

2018, Russia

Aleksandr Markov

Film teams from Soviet studios in Moscow, Kiev, Tbilisi, and Tashkent documented events in Africa from 1960, when 17 countries gained independence, to 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed. In his montage of this archive material, Markov reveals propaganda mechanisms and construction processes of the other. He not only documents Soviet involvement in Africa in his film, but also sheds light on Soviet projections onto the continent.
