НАЧАЛО (THE BEGINNING)

1967, USSR

Artavazd Pelešjan

Pelešjan has based his thesis film on the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution and has created a dense collage of sound and images from found footage. Crowds are in motion. We hear gunshots, church bells, and impelling music. Rather than creating a linear narrative, the film conveys an impression or feeling. Condensed into ten minutes, it covers the pre-revolutionary period, the revolution and Lenin's death in 1924, as well as protests during the 1960s in Europe, Japan, and the US. As Pelešjan writes, his films are difficult to put into words. They ‘exist on the screen, you have to watch them.’
