MURGHAB (Online)

The Tadjik town of Murghab is situated 3,600 metres above sea level not far from the Chinese and Afghan borders. Murghab was the highest situated town in the former Soviet Union, including an airport, a theatre, a hospital with central heating, and a cinema. Today not much is left of it on the barren high plain. The inhabitants burn dry bushes in order to heat their houses. In the ruins of socialism, however, they have found their niches anyway. Life is neither easy nor comfortable, but still the people don’t want to leave Murghab.
