MUEDA, MEMÓRIA E MASSACRE (MUEDA, MEMORY AND MASSACRE)
1979, Mozambique
Ruy Guerra
On 16 June 1960, Portuguese soldiers opened fire on protesters in Mueda, killing hundreds of people. The massacre is remembered as the trigger for the anti-colonial battle in Mozambique. As early as 1968, while the war of liberation was still going on, popular theatre plays addressed the Mueda massacre. Ruy Guerra, who became known as part of the Brazilian Cinema Novo, returned to his now independent homeland in 1978. With this film, which is regarded Mozambique's first feature film, the director shows a re-enactment of that day played by amateur actors.
