MOTHER, I AM SUFFOCATING. THIS IS MY LAST FILM ABOUT YOU

2019, Lesotho/Qatar

Lemohang Mosese

A woman drags a cross through the streets. Is that a queer angel-like figure beside her? Another woman knits incessantly, using a yarn wrapped around a boy’s head. Flocks of sheep roam the countryside; people go about their work; and a voice talks about it all as if from a crackling radio. The exiled director bids farewell to his homeland, Lesotho, in this cinematic lament. The documentary-style, deeply personal meditation in black and white oscillates between anger and love, whilst addressing the legacy of Christian colonialism.
