MOSSANE
1996, Senegal/France/Germany
Safi Faye
Many of the male inhabitants of a small Senegalese village are attracted to young Mossane. While the fourteen-year-old has a clear favourite amongst the lined-up men, her mother is initiating a marriage that was arranged shortly after Mossane’s birth. Beginning her journey into adulthood, the heroine of this film – the last made by pioneering director Safi Faye – must choose between social and economic duty and her feelings. A tragedy of liberating disobedience, fictional, legendary, a document and a timeless breach of taboo all at once.
