MONANGAMBEEE
1969, Algeria
Sarah Maldoror
Sarah Maldoror’s directorial debut is based on ‘O Fato Completo de Lucas Matesso’, a short story about a political prisoner, written by Angolan author Luandino Vieira when he was a political prisoner himself. Working with non-professional actors, including liberation fighters, and experimental jazz from the Art Ensemble Chicago, Maldoror reveals the Portuguese colonial government’s arbitrariness and use of torture practices. He also sheds light on their ignorance of the people of Angola and their culture. Although filmed in Algeria, MONANGAMBEEE is considered a cornerstone of Angolan cinema.
