MEMORY

2025, France/Netherlands

Vladlena Sandu

Vladlena Sandu was born in Crimea and sent to live with her grandparents in Grozny at the age of six – shortly before the First Chechen War broke out. Vladlena Sandu gradually approaches these childhood experiences, bringing her memories to life in fragments and surrealist images shot on 16mm film. Visual tricks, action figures, dolls and miniature houses come together to form a landscape of memory, with the director’s voice guiding through them as a voiceover. MEMORY is an intimate, experimental documentary that translates violent realities into multi-layered visual language.
