KOUTÉ VWA (LISTEN TO THE VOICES)

2024, Belgium/France/French Guiana

Maxime Jean-Baptiste

Every summer, 13-year-old Melrick from Paris stays with his grandmother in Cayenne, French Guiana, where the memory of his uncle is being kept alive. A DJ and drummer, Lucas was killed at a party and has since become symbolic of the issue of violence in the French overseas territory. Melrick gets to know him through memories and stories, and joins in paying tribute by making music together. A loving – and true – story of mourning, resilience and joy, staged by Maxime Jean-Baptiste with family and friends who play themselves.
