LE JEU / ИГРА (THE GAME)

1989, USSR

Abderrahmane Sissako

With this film, Sissako completed his studies at the VGIK. He shot the film in Turkmenistan where he found a landscape similar to that of Mali. Ahmed's father must go back to the front. He has only one day with his wife and son. With powerful, innocent cruelty, the children of the village play war games, mirroring their fathers’ reality. ‘War is a massacre of people who don’t know each other at the expense of people who do know each other but don’t massacre.’ This quote at the end of the film highlights the anti-war attitude that resonates throughout the film.
