LA ZERDA ET LES CHANTS DE L’OUBLI (LA ZERDA UND DIE GESÄNGE DES VERGESSENS)

1982, Algeria

Assia Djebar

In the early 20th century, colonialist photographers and videographers set out to capture colonised Maghreb with their orientalist gaze. Assia Djebar took on the visual material from the years 1912 to 1942 to create a new memory using avant-garde film techniques. With angry political poetry, anonymous voices and lots of music, the Algerian writer, feminist and first female director in Algerian film history rectifies the colonial archive’s images: only after being re-edited and given new soundtracks do they reveal the reality on the ground.
