KUMMATTY

1979, India

Govindan Aravindan

Govindan Aravindan was a pioneering director of films in Malayalam, one of India's oldest languages, spoken by around 35 million people today. Shaji N. Karun, a long-standing friend and supporter of IFFI, was the cameraman for KUMMATTY. Karun and Aravindan managed to create a visually stunning interpretation of the eponymous figure, bringing myth, the naive joy of discovery and documentary observation fittingly together. The children of the village are fascinated by the song-singing magician – but his magic is not without danger.
