ILHA DAS FLORES (INSEL DER BLUMEN)

1989, Brasil
ILHA DAS FLORES

Jorge Furtado

ILHA DAS FLORES is considered one of the most influential short films ever. Full of irony, it shows the cycles and erring of modern life: a tomato is harvested in Porto Alegre by Mr Suzuki; through various barter and money transactions, it ends up in the kitchen of Dona Anete and finally on the landfill that gives the film its title. However, no flowers grow on ‘flower island’. On the contrary, it becomes evident that the capitalist system is rotten. A flow of images that masterfully appropriates the style of an informative film and has lost nothing of its visual significance and topicality.
