HYÈNES (HYÄNEN)
1992, Senegal
Djibril Diop Mambéty
Director Djibril Diop Mambéty made a name for himself in cinema with just two feature films. Following TOUKI BOUKI (1973), he transposed Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s play ‘The Visit’ to a fictional Senegalese village. Linguère Ramatou, now fabulously wealthy, returns home decades later and promises the villagers a huge sum of money – provided they kill the grocer who impregnated her in her youth and then abandoned her. In Mambéty’s HYÈNES, the familiar material becomes a stunning critique of neo-colonial capitalism.
