Rural China in 1995: Inspector Ma Zhe tries to solve the murder of a senior citizen. Coming under increasing pressure, he has to decide between a potential career advancement and his conscience. In powerful, poetic film noir images, director Wei Shujun tells the story of a dutiful man's dilemma and, on a wider scale – and politically quite topical – his failure in a repressive social system. Once again, cinema – in this case transformed into a secret police headquarters – becomes a place for a sensual search for truth.
