HARÀ WATAN (LOST LAND)

2025, Japan/France/Malaysia/Germany

Akio Fujimoto

Nine-year-old Somira and her four-year-old brother Shafi set off on a clandestine boat journey to Malaysia from a Rohingya refugee camp, accompanied by their aunt and grandfather. An uncle is waiting for them, but the escape does not go as planned. During the arduous journey, they also meet friendly and helpful people – and they also find moments in which they can let their imagination run wild. Filmed with a handheld camera, Akio Fujimoto tells a story of displacement from a child’s perspective in a playful yet realistic manner. This is the first ever feature film in the Rohingya language.
