ГОСПОЖА ТУНДРА (FRAU TUNDRA)

1986, USSR

Sergej Mirošničenko

‘Reindeer mean life. If there had been no reindeer in the past, there would have been no life in the North.’ Reindeer provided food, clothing, and transport for the indigenous peoples of the North. The film shows how wolves were hunted by the state in the 1980s to protect the reindeer herds, while at the same time reindeer were also shot at. Mirošničenko takes a critical look at the relationship between humans and the environment and the impact of state interference with the tundra’s ecology. Not only the helicopter footage is emblematic of man's claim to domination over nature.
