FREDA
2021, France/Haiti/Benin
Gessica Généus
Freda lives in a poor area of Port-au-Prince together with her mother, sister and brother. They use different strategies to navigate through everyday life and create prospects for themselves in these times of economic downturn and permanent upheaval. Freda (a brilliantly brisk Néhémie Bastien) is sharp, non-conformist and critical. Généus weaves a dense structure in her debut film that addresses not only issues such as Blackness and the difficult colonial heritage but also patriarchal structures and the power of religions over people.
