AL-YAD AL-KHADRA (FORAGERS)

Zatar and Akoub are two key plants for Palestinian food culture. In her film, artist Jumana Manna shows how they are harvested and processed by hand; but she also depicts patrolling and interrogating – because Israeli law prohibits and penalises picking. Many Palestinians ignore this prohibition and refuse to buy the cultivated variety. AL-YAD AL-KHADRA is a thoughtful documentary showing that control over nature equals control over culture.
