FIUME O MORTE!

2025, Croatia/Italy/Slovenia

Igor Bezinović

Gabriele D’Annunzio: Italian poet, fascist and occupier of the city of Fiume (today Rijeka) for 16 months. In September 1919, D’Annunzio took the city with 300 men. With the help of the local population, Bezinović tells the absurd story of the occupation and the devastating impact it had on the city and its inhabitants. Combining interviews with re-enactment and photographs, the director creates a sobering and at the same time punk cinematic journey that is as serious as it is comically surreal. Even though this story took place over 100 years ago, it seems shockingly relevant today.
